Safety & Hiring Tips

Finding the right professional starts with good information and a few practical precautions. These tips can help businesses, trade professionals, and property owners connect more safely through SWFL Trade Circle.

Understand Our Role

SWFL Trade Circle is a directory and community platform. We help people find businesses, share projects, and communicate.

A listing, approved account, review, or badge does not mean we have verified a business’s licenses, insurance, qualifications, or background. Labels such as “New,” “Popular,” and “Featured” are not professional certifications.

We do not perform or supervise work, hold project deposits, or guarantee services or payments. You are responsible for deciding whom to hire and agreeing directly on the work.

Before You Hire

Verify the Business

Ask for the business’s name, contact information, and the name of the person responsible for your project.

Check that the information on estimates, contracts, insurance documents, and payment instructions is consistent. If something does not match, ask for an explanation before proceeding.

Do not rely solely on a logo, website, social media profile, or listing.

Check Licensing and Insurance

Ask whether the proposed work requires a professional or contractor license. Verify applicable requirements with the relevant Florida licensing agency and local building department.

When a license is required, confirm that it is current, belongs to the person or business you are hiring, and covers the type of work proposed.

Request evidence of appropriate insurance. When necessary, confirm coverage directly with the insurance provider using independently verified contact information.

Statements such as “licensed and insured” should be checked—not simply assumed to be accurate.

Ask for References and Relevant Experience

Ask about similar projects and request recent references when appropriate.

With permission, review examples of completed work. Ask references about communication, timeliness, unexpected costs, and how problems were handled.

Consider several sources of information. A high rating or a single recommendation should not replace your own evaluation.

Compare Written Estimates

For larger projects, consider obtaining more than one written estimate.

Compare the scope, materials, preparation, cleanup, schedule, and exclusions—not just the final price. An unusually low estimate may leave out important work or costs.

Ask questions about anything unclear before accepting.

Put the Agreement in Writing

Before work begins, make sure both parties understand and document:

  • The names and contact details of the parties.
  • The location and scope of work.
  • Materials, products, and specifications.
  • The price and payment schedule.
  • Expected start and completion dates.
  • Who handles permits, inspections, and cleanup.
  • How changes and additional charges will be approved.
  • Any warranties or follow-up work.
  • Cancellation and dispute-handling terms.

Keep a copy of the signed agreement. Do not sign documents with blank sections or terms you do not understand.

For complex or high-value projects, consider having a qualified attorney review the contract.

Pay Carefully

Before paying, confirm who will receive the money and what the payment covers.

Be cautious if someone:

  • Pressures you to pay immediately.
  • Demands full payment before work begins without a clear explanation.
  • Requests gift cards, cryptocurrency, or an unusual payment method.
  • Asks you to send money to an unrelated person.
  • Offers a discount only if you avoid receipts or written records.
  • Changes payment instructions unexpectedly.

Use a payment method that provides a record, and obtain receipts. Understand the protections and limitations of your chosen payment method.

For staged projects, consider tying payments to clearly defined progress. Verify completion and any agreed inspection or documentation requirements before making the final payment.

SWFL Trade Circle does not provide escrow or hold payments for work arranged between users.

Confirm Payment Changes Independently

If you receive new bank details or a request to redirect a payment, verify it using a phone number you already know is genuine.

Do not rely on the phone number or link included in the message announcing the change. Email accounts and invoices can be impersonated or compromised.

Protect Your Property and Personal Information

Share only the information needed for the project.

Do not post these details publicly:

  • Door, gate, alarm, or lockbox codes.
  • Banking or payment-card information.
  • Identification documents.
  • Passwords or verification codes.
  • Details about when a property will be empty.

Confirm the identity of people arriving at your property before granting access. Make appropriate arrangements for children, pets, valuables, and restricted areas.

Avoid sharing photographs that reveal sensitive documents, security arrangements, or private belongings.

Use Caution When Meeting Someone New

For an initial meeting, consider a public location when practical. If a site visit is necessary, let someone you trust know the arrangements.

Confirm the visitor’s name and business beforehand. Consider having another adult present if you are uncomfortable meeting alone.

If you feel unsafe, end the interaction. Do not feel obligated to continue because you have already discussed a project.

Recognize Common Warning Signs

Pause and investigate if you encounter:

  • Pressure to make an immediate decision.
  • Refusal to provide a written estimate or agreement.
  • Inconsistent names, contact details, or qualifications.
  • Requests to conceal information from a property owner or permitting authority.
  • Claims that SWFL Trade Circle guarantees or insures the work.
  • Requests for passwords or account verification codes.
  • Unsolicited links asking you to sign in or make a payment.
  • Threats, intimidation, or aggressive responses to reasonable questions.

A warning sign does not automatically prove fraud, but it is a reason to slow down and verify the situation.

Tips for Trade Professionals and Businesses

Safety and clear expectations matter for service providers too.

Before accepting work:

  • Confirm the customer’s identity and authority to request the work.
  • Clarify the location, scope, access arrangements, and payment responsibility.
  • Use written estimates and agreements.
  • Document changes before performing additional work.
  • Keep records of approvals, invoices, and payments.
  • Ask about relevant site hazards before arriving.
  • Decline work you are not qualified or legally authorized to perform.

Be cautious of overpayment schemes. If someone sends more than the agreed amount and asks you to return the difference or pay another party, contact your financial institution before taking action.

Do not assume that funds shown as available mean a payment cannot later be reversed.

Do not pay an unknown person merely to “unlock” a project or release a customer’s payment.

Keep Communication and Records

Keep copies of estimates, contracts, messages, invoices, receipts, and relevant photographs.

Confirm important decisions in writing, including changes to the scope, schedule, or price.

Website messaging can be useful, but keep your own records of important agreements. Do not assume the website will retain every message or attachment indefinitely.

If Something Goes Wrong

For a service disagreement, describe the issue clearly and give the other party a reasonable opportunity to respond when it is safe to do so.

Refer to your written agreement and keep a record of communications. Depending on the issue, you may wish to contact a licensing authority, consumer protection agency, payment provider, or attorney.

For suspected fraud, contact your bank or payment provider promptly. Report threats or criminal activity to the appropriate authorities.

You may also report suspected misuse of SWFL Trade Circle through the website’s report feature or by emailing info@swfltradecircle.com. Include the relevant listing or profile link and a brief explanation.

We may review platform conduct, but we cannot guarantee reimbursement, compel a business to perform work, or resolve legal disputes between users.

Leave an Honest Review

After an experience with a business, consider sharing a factual, useful review.

Explain what happened, distinguish opinion from fact, and avoid threats or private information. Honest positive and negative feedback can help others make informed decisions.

See our Community & Review Guidelines before posting.

Emergencies

SWFL Trade Circle is not an emergency service, and reports are not monitored as an emergency response channel.

If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.
